MoederscheimMoonen Architects and IDEFIX landscape architecture, commissioned by Bouwbedrijf Vaessen BV and the municipality of Moerdijk, have won the tender for the new De Niervaert sports and cultural complex in Klundert. The plan includes a swimming pool with a competition and recreational pool, multiple sports halls, and a cultural center with food and beverage outlets. The building will be approximately 6,000 m² and will be constructed in phases at the current Niervaert site, at the Molenvliet sports park.

De Niervaert combines a competition and recreational pool, a toddler pool, a sports hall, and cultural spaces in a single compact and efficiently organized building. The central catering area forms the social heart of the building, where sports, spectators, socializing, and relaxation converge. From here, clear walking routes ensure intuitive routes and flexible use of the building.
Because the current event center, swimming pool, and sports hall must remain in separate use during construction, the new complex will be built in phases on the southwest side of the site. This will create a large green forecourt on the site of the current building, with a welcoming entrance, pleasant terraces, secure bicycle parking, and several recreational areas.
The building design displays a balanced structure resulting from the positioning of the various functions. The halls belonging to the cultural center are situated on the front facade; these exhibit a high degree of transparency and a close relationship with the central entrance and the catering area. This area clearly protrudes, referencing Klundert's original fortifications.
Vertical elements tie the building together, accentuating its flowing movement. At the entrance, these elements subtly detach from the main volume to support the canopy that accentuates the entrance and the terrace. The entire structure is designed with soft, golden brown tones combined with brickwork, glass, and an elegant profiled facade panel.
In collaboration with landscape architect IDEFIX, a site design was developed that, in harmony with the building's design, reflects the architectural language of the fortifications. The site will be greener and climate-adaptive, with space for water storage, bicycle parking, a beach court, and views to the surrounding sports fields. Native plants and amenities for bats, swifts, house sparrows, and hedgehogs will create a living ecosystem that visibly enhances biodiversity. In this way, the design breathes new life into the building's location in several ways.
Sustainability is a natural pillar of the design. Wooden beams in the pool create a warm atmosphere and a lower carbon footprint. The structure is designed to be reusable, using reusable steel elements. Recycled bricks are used in the plinth to further reduce the environmental impact.
