A new Oude IJssel Bridge

Commissioned by the municipality of Zutphen, we designed the renovation and widening of the Oude IJsselbrug in the Hanseatic city. The widening of the bridge was necessary to create a better pedestrian and bicycle zone and was part of the ‘River in the City’ program, which aimed to improve the quality of the city.

The eighth renovation of the bridge

The current structure is already the eighth version of the bridge. Over the years, the bridge has undergone various changes, resulting in a colorful history. Wood, steel, bombings, and borrowed constructions from Zaltbommel, Breukelen, and Oosterbeek are just a few examples of the historical elements that make this place so special.

The design

The new design for the bicycle and pedestrian bridge is modern, yet at the same time respects the history of the bridge. The design follows a strong, iconic line along the bridge and features a glass balustrade that offers pedestrians an unobstructed view over the IJssel. The rust-colored plinth underneath forms a powerful line that connects the two banks and gives the bridge a new and sleek appearance.

Waves of light

In the evening, waves of light shine along the bridge, thanks to the perforations in the bench. This light refers to the flowing IJssel and ensures that pedestrians and cyclists can see safely in the dark. The lighting also makes the bridge stand out just as much at night as it does during the day. The light changes color with the seasons and during special events, giving the bridge an even more beautiful and impressive appearance.
