In the beautiful wooded surroundings of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug stands the Revius Lyceum Doorn. Together with Spring Architects, we were commissioned to design a new school building that could be constructed while the old school building remained in use.

Our team aimed to design a school building without corridors, so that all areas would serve as effective learning spaces. This resulted in a compact, three-story building with learning plazas and classrooms clustered around the heart of the school. Daylight plays an important role in the design. All learning plazas are situated along the façade, and the central auditorium features skylights to provide ample light.
Sports play an important role in the education at Revius Lyceum. The school's main large sports field, which is surrounded by trees, has therefore remained untouched. A beach volleyball court, panna cage, and other site elements that encourage physical activity have been added.
The outdoor area is designed as a schoolyard with the qualities of a landscaped garden. In front of the building, there is a large water feature that serves as a buffer during rainfall. There are various natural break and sports areas on the site, including an outdoor theater.
The exterior of the building refers to the country estates that characterize the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. We have given the building a second façade, which, with colored steel slats, creates a bold gesture towards the surroundings, but also softens the transition between inside and outside.
By designing the sports building separately from the school building, demolition and construction could take place in phases. The new school was built on the site of the old sports halls, after the new sports building had been constructed in a different location.
