At the municipality of Eemnes, in the province of Utrecht, there was a need for a central meeting place. A place where everyone from the area can come for sports, events, and the library, but also for information, education, and advice. In collaboration with construction company Vaessen, we created the multifunctional Huis van Eemnes.

The Huis van Eemnes is a place where the library, theater hall, sports hall, and hospitality come together in one meeting spot. This calls for a design that connects. With this starting point, we created a building in which the library and the brasserie form a central place and are directly connected to the various multifunctional rooms, the theater, and the sports hall. Upon entering, visitors immediately find themselves in this vibrant heart of the building.
With an area of approximately 5,700 m2 and all those different functions, we created a design in which the roof is, as it were, laid over these functions. In this way, despite the diversity inside, the building still radiates the unity and connection of a central meeting place.
To create variety in the facade, the pattern from the Eemnes coat of arms has been perforated into parts of the facade. This gives the facade a strong visual gesture from a distance and detail and refinement up close.
The Huis van Eemnes is completely energy-neutral: the building operates electrically and, thanks to the solar panels, even generates more energy than it consumes. Sustainability and climate considerations are also reflected outside the building. For example, the site design is entirely focused on water absorption, and the skate park in front of the building serves as a water square during heavy rainfall.
