At first glance, it may not seem like the Maritime District, with its tall buildings, has a rich history. But behind the high towers lies the story of a bustling trading port and the reconstruction after the Second World War. On top of one of the post-war buildings on Scheepmakershaven, we are designing a new residential building for Stebru: Riva.

On the site of the Riva residential tower, there are currently two office buildings that were designed between 1956 and 1963. The municipality of Rotterdam has designated these buildings as valuable post-war reconstruction architecture. They display the typical character of this architectural style and had to be preserved as much as possible during the redevelopment and expansion into a residential building.
Riva is designed as an ‘optopping’ and thus stands in beautiful contrast to the existing buildings. The 56 apartments offer plenty of transparency and a wide view of the harbor and city center. The undulating outdoor spaces are a nod to the water and the history of the area. Thanks to their generous dimensions, they serve as an extension of the apartments. In this way, they create a unique and spacious living environment in the heart of the city.
Between the characteristic office building and the rooftop extension, there will be a communal layer that connects living and working. This layer will feature a living room and a rooftop garden.
The defining element of this layer is the structural framework that supports the tower. This construction carries the entire tower and thus punches through the existing substructure with its columns.
