Our capital city is constantly changing, but no district in Amsterdam is undergoing as much transformation as Amstel III. Under the name SPOT (Superior Plan of Transformation), part of the area will soon be transformed into a vibrant residential and business district. Real estate developers COD and DUQER are the driving force behind this transformation, with the master plan developed by KAAN Architecten. In co-creation with Klunder and DOOR Architecten, we designed one of the new buildings in the area, called Aurelia.

The building consists of a plinth with space for various functions and a tower with rental apartments. DOOR Architecten is responsible for the design of the plinth, which features a diverse program. There will be urban homes, offices, commercial functions, a daycare center, the main bicycle storage, and the entrance to the residential tower above. The plinth is designed as a woven structure of reddish-brown brick with large windows in between. This ensures the plinth fits perfectly within the overall quality of the plinths in the area, as described in the urban development plan.
Our firm is responsible for the residential tower. This tower stands in contrast to the robust base of the building. The residential tower separate itself from the base and features a contrasting façade of glass and gold-colored façade bands that also run across the balconies. The gold-colored bands have a special perforation and folding technique, giving the façade a different appearance at every moment of the day.
For the homes, a varied plan of three basic floor plans was chosen. By alternating the different floor plans on top of each other, this way, a varied and playful positioning of balconies on the facade is created.
