Airiness and transparency

Sport Pavilion Zestienhoven is a sports building that we designed as part of a green residential area in Rotterdam, Park Zestienhoven. The pavilion is part of the new residential district Park Zestienhoven, located next to Rotterdam Airport. The building is designed to maintain the openness and transparency of the surroundings while also having a striking appearance.

The sports pavilion is intended for two football clubs and is located between the park area and the new housing. The design is based on a division of the program of requirements. The changing facilities and storage rooms are situated on the ground floor, while the canteen and boardrooms are located on the upper floor. To maintain contact with the playing fields, the ground slopes up from the playing level to the level of the canteen. As a result, the canteen becomes part of the green surroundings and a single-storey pavilion is created on top of this green mound.

The building features an overhanging semi-transparent roof that forms the connecting element between the two associations. The roof contributes to the light, pavilion-like appearance of the building. During the day, the roof filters sunlight, and in the evening it glows like a lantern thanks to the integration of LED lighting. As a result, the building will become a beacon in the area and also contribute to social safety in the neighborhood.

On the field side, the green mound is shaped in such a way that it functions as a sunbathing lawn. This allows people to enjoy the football being played on the surrounding fields at various levels and in different ways. As a result, the building is not only a functional facility for the football clubs, but also an attractive meeting place for the local community.
